Successful Work in Manufacturing (SWIM)

Are you looking to pursue a career in the manufacturing industry? The SWIM program offered by Goodwill Amity is a brand-new program for passionate individuals who identify as a woman and the youth of all genders between the ages of 18-29 years. The 4-week training program provides participants with the technical skills and business acumen that will help them make their way up in the manufacturing world. At the end of the training period, participants will have direct access to interview for some of Ontario’s top manufacturing employers.

This project is funded by Employment Ontario and training is provided by City Schools by Mohawk College.

What the Successful Work in Manufacturing (SWIM) program offers:

  • 4 weeks free training
  • Access to monetary supports including emergency childcare, transportation and mental health supports through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Support during the first 160 hours of employment including work transportation, work clothing, personal hygiene, and groceries
  • Job fair with direct access to interview with top employers in the manufacturing sector
  • Hybrid learning environment: all course material and discussions will take place online, as well as a hands-on component in the Rapid Skills Lab at City Schools by Mohawk College

Eligibility

  • Individuals who identify as a woman
  • Youths of all genders between the ages of 18-29 years
  • High school education and/or diploma or certificate
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Residing in Hamilton or Halton
  • Canadian Language Benchmark level 5
  • Able to commit to 4 weeks of full-time training (Monday – Friday, approx. 18h per week)

Training Details

Participants will learn technical, foundational, and socio-emotional skills and support to find sustainable employment in advanced manufacturing. The training period is for 4 weeks, Monday through Friday. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM and Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM, with a combination of online and in-person sessions. Participants need to have access to a working computer system with a webcam and a secure internet connection. (Participants will be provided with equipment for the duration of the program should they need it).

  • Essential technical training in partnership with City Schools by Mohawk College
  • Hands on training in the Rapid Skills Lab at City Schools by Mohawk College
  • Business acumen
  • Soft skills training, job coaching and job development
  • Certified Product Technician (CPT) 4.0 certification
